Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
