The Leading Record of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Top Spot.

On the surface, Lux could seem more like a challenging scholarly examination rather than the latest pop project by an artist whose previous single was a collaboration with a global pop star. Split across 4 separate parts and performed in 13 languages, this is a head-spinning symphonic work investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and corporal change, often by way of the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—is shot upwards on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter within a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring by itself renders the work of other pop stars appear rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

That Lux manages to escape dry academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, with full praise belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions feel much higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that really raises this fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her height, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart apart, you still want to be alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Then, everything falls silent, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in like cartoonish force. The track then shifts into the wild track driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to predict—where it will go next."

Nearly each track concludes at a totally distinct point from how it began. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before collapsing in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic style begins out dark and sinister, with menacing beats, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to soften its jagged corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

Another crucial achievement of Lux is navigating the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is no coincidence that it has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of truly undeniable hits. One track sung entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to gather increasingly nagging hooks while it spins upward. That feat is repeated by another powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with pop culture honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, Lux offers a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, some intoxicated on holy drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
