Jon Ruben pleaded guilty to 17 criminal counts at the courthouse on the end of the week

An individual who contaminated candy with sleeping medication and provided them to youngsters at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offences against two young males both nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight children and an older person became sick at the facility in the summer month.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he appeared at the judicial center on recently.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was against a young boy.

Ruben was kept in jail ahead of a subsequent court date on late November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he managed.

The defendant played a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the young males "for many years", and minors had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She stated the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had concerns in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about the situation, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including baby oil, Vaseline and medical needles were found, and his stepson contacted the police about his suspicions.

She stated Ruben proceeded to play the "candy game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not responded by that point," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor said the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson contacted the police once more.

She explained the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
