New research suggests that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
