RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
