Heartbreaking News on UPS Accident: Death Toll Climbs to 13

The tally of victims resulting from the freight aircraft that caught fire and went down has reached 13, according to recent reports.

Official's Remarks

Traveling to the Workers’ vigil, I learned of a thirteenth victim that died as a outcome of the UPS flight 2976 incident,” wrote the city mayor in a public communication. “My thoughts are with the loved ones, associates and peers of all who were killed in this recent tragedy. We will get through this collectively.”

Deceased Identified

A release from the company named the pilots operating the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Pilot Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts reach out to each staff member who has been touched and all in our community area – supporting you and making sure you receive the care and assistance you need is our focus,” the firm’s message stated.

Investigation Details

National authorities revealed that the UPS cargo plane’s left wing burst into flames and an engine separated soon after liftoff from the airfield, causing the jet to crash and explode into a blaze.

The NTSB announced it is examining the jet’s maintenance history, that was in Texas for fixes several weeks prior to the incident.

Aviation records revealed the plane was on the runway in San Antonio, Texas from 3 September to last week.

“We are cognizant that this jet was present in the facility,” said an investigator on Thursday, not giving a precise time frame. “We will examine all elements of maintenance that was completed, including the repair time, right up to the day of the journey.”

Recovery of Vital Components

The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were retrieved, and the motor was discovered on the airfield.

The recorders – known as data containers – were built to survive crash impacts and severe fire from blazes, and they looked to be undamaged when found among the wreckage. Officials plan on examining information from the recorders.

Jet’s final recorded information showed an altitude of 475 feet and a speed of 210 mph before the accident.

Service Background

Per FAA documents dated last month, a crack on a structural piece in the tank area needed maintenance.

The company ST Engineering, which stated it offers structural repairs for the company’s MD-11 and manages a repair facility in Texas, declined to speak, but said it would assist completely when relevant authorities reached out it.

Operations Resume

Meanwhile, the facility services restarted that evening with its Next Day Air or evening process, spokesperson Jim Mayer stated. All three tarmacs at the airport were also reopened.

The sorting center in the city is the company’s most significant. The hub hires over twenty thousand individuals in the region, processes numerous trips each day and processes more than 400,000 items each hour.

Local Response

A memorial was organized on the night of that date by the regional Teamsters Union, which represents workers at the aviation hub, the firm’s largest freight center.

The union chapter, which represents UPS workers, started the gathering with a quiet tribute at 5.14pm, the rough hour of the crash before.

“This tragedy was so sudden, so unexpected,” the mayor addressed the assembly of two hundred. “No one had a chance to bid farewell to any of those who we have mourned.”
