Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism rendered him without words and required to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
